 Upper South Island
With a relaxed lifestyle and endless sunshine, Nelson is well-known for its arts and crafts culture, as well as the bush-fringed covers and golden beaches of the picturesque Abel Tasman National Park. Just over the ranges is the home of award-winning sauvignon blanc wine producers in Marlborough, while Picton is the gateway to the secluded coves and clear waters of the Marlborough Sounds.
 Canterbury
Canterbury is a region of huge diversity. The flat fertile plains give rise to the tussock-clad high country and huge sheep stations, eventually reaching the long spine of the Southern Alps, home to New Zealand's highest peak Mount Cook. Activities include skiing, tramping, jet boating, whale watching, horse riding, hot springs, wine-tasting and gentle strolls through the gardens in the 'English' city of Christchurch.
 West Coast
The West Coast is rugged, remote, wild and spectacular, with pounding surf and deserted beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. It is difficult to imagine that this was once a major centre for gold-rush fever in the 1800s. Nowadays it is famous for the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, ancient rainforests, magical sunsets, roaring rivers, and the towering summits of the Southern Alps.
 Central and Southern Otago
Queenstown may claim to be the adrenalin capital of New Zealand, but the Otago region has far more to offer the visitor. It stretches from the university town of Dunedin, through the high tussock country and former gold-rush settlements, to the picturesque lakeside resort of Wanaka. With vast mountain ranges, forests, rivers and lakes it is a paradise for tramping or simply taking in the magnificent views.
 Fiords and Southland
This vast region is in many places unexplored and accessible only by helicopter, boat or on foot. From the mighty peaks towering above the crystal clear waters of the fiords, the wildlife and ancient native forests of the Catlins, to the unspoilt wilderness of Stewart Island, it is an area providing some of the most breathtaking scenery and remote experiences to be found in New Zealand.
